JACKALOPE VIRGINIA BEACH 2024: Highlights of the bouldering, basejump and skimboard comps

June 13, 2024 / By yann

JACKALOPE Virginia Beach 2024 was one for the books. We still feel the good vibes of intense adrenaline and passion and we are ready to tell you all about one of the craziest weekends in the event’s history. It has to be said that the location is especially appropriate, with its long and beautiful beach. Spectators were out in force, as was the fine weather.

New features this year included a new vert ramp, innovative competition formats in several disciplines, and a thematic nod to the legend of the pirate Blackbeard, whose treasure is said to be buried under the sea off VB. As always, the event features equal prize money for men and women, a roster of the world’s finest athletes and a festive atmosphere. Here are the highlights of the various disciplines in competition and demonstration. But before that, here is our video recap of the weekend.

BOULDERING

It’s not often you can boulder surrounded by skaters, skimboarders and base jumpers, and it’s something that climbers really appreciate. The fact that the competition brings together the best athletes in America while being excluded from the official competition circuit allows much greater flexibility and interaction with the hosts and the crowd, to everyone’s great benefit. Athletes used to the podium are still motivated by the purse, and the show had the crowd screaming particularly loud for the occasion.

A highly popular segment for spectators is the “dyno comp”, in which participants are challenged to solve problems in the most spectacular and creative way possible. In a format similar to the jam format of skateboard competitions, the climbers outdid themselves by recruiting the crowd to generate excitement for their tricks, and in so doing, put their hands on the purse. All in all, it’s clear that the mix of different disciplines inspires novelty and a unique atmosphere at Jackalope. In the end, words are hard to find to describe all that goes on during such a crazy weekend, so here are a few links to see photos and videos of the best moments. The Jackalope family continues to grow, and the experience continues to stir the passionate hearts of the athletes. We look forward to seeing you this year in Mississauga, Montreal or next year in Virginia Beach!

BASEJUMPING

How do you make an action sports event even more extreme and intense? Add base jumping! This adrenaline-fueled tradition continued in Virginia Beach for the second year running. If the beach provides an extraordinary atmosphere for all, it’s certainly a challenge for the jumpers. The scenery is splendid, but the lack of space and the offshore wind made it more challenging to our jumpers, who were already under the constraint of a very precise and technical jump due to the height.

The jump base was 130 feet, which is pretty low when you consider that the crane used for Jackalope Montreal and Mississauga is 300 feet high. Even so, we were treated to a memorable performance by the base jumpers. Team captain Mat Lajeunesse took top honors in the men’s category and Bibi Carmouche took 1st place in the women’s category. Well done to them and to all the athletes who competed for a cash prize for the first time, proof that the sport is gaining in appreciation. A special mention to one of the jumpers, Lorenzo Demuro, who dared to perform a trick called a cannonball despite the difficulty of this setup!

 SKIMBOARDING

Showcased for the second year running at Jackalope VB, skimboarding is fast becoming a crowd favorite (and Virginia Beach exclusive). If you have ever seen the sport, you know that the athletes perform their tricks right on the beach, so spectators are right in the middle of the action. Halfway between skateboarding and surfing, so less dependent on waves and tides, the perfect weather still helped deliver the best possible version of the competition. The waves and the sun were there, but so was the talent! The Skim USA-sanctioned competition brought together the best athletes in the world, and featured a number of heart-stopping barrel rides that had the delighted audience screaming.

Both the pool demonstration with obstacles (Kicker, box and rail) and the ocean competition saw performances beyond expectations. It’s been reported that this leg of the skimboard competition circuit is one of the athletes’ favorites, thanks to the legendary ambiance of the Virginian beach combined with the energy of the Jackalope family!
