Closing out the 2024 JACKALOPE season, Montreal’s festival proved to be the perfect final showcase for athletes to display their strength and skill. This proved especially true with the bouldering competitions, sanctioned by Allez Up and presented by Arc’teryx, where the energy was palpable and the performances electrifying.

Kicking off the weekend was the Scramble Comp, featuring 25 different boulders designed to test climbers’ abilities and problem-solving skills. The competition began with three qualification heats—one on Friday night and two on Saturday afternoon. Competitors had the option to register in one of two categories: Recreational, aimed at beginner to advanced climbers, and Open, reserved for expert climbers. This setup allowed for a wide range of skill levels to participate and shine, ensuring an engaging competition for everyone involved.

After the qualification heats, scores were tallied to determine the results. In the Open category, the top 12 climbers—6 men and 6 women—advanced to the Finals. Meanwhile, in the Recreational category, the top 6 climbers—3 men and 3 women—earned podium spots and won Arc’teryx prizes.

For the rush format Open Finals, climbers were divided into two groups per category. During the round, each group had 8 minutes to tackle their set of bouldering problems and allowed athletes to work together and figure out beta together. Among the standout moments of the night, Ross Fulkerson made a dramatic impression by going feet first on the final move of M1, securing the first top of the evening and setting the tone for the rest of the competition.

Matthew Rodriguez also delivered an impressive performance on M3, where he cleverly skipped a hold to top, demonstrating both creativity and precision. In the women’s category, hometown favourite Babette Roy flashed W3 with a spectacular coordination dyno, clenching her victory and the only top in her category with an impressive display of skill and flair. Sofie, who finished second, had won a Golden Ticket at the Arc’teryx Academy back in August, securing her place at JACKALOPE Montréal, making her podium finish even more exciting as she continues to grow in the sport.

New to JACKALOPE this year was the Speed Bouldering competition, which introduced an exciting tournament-style format. Climbers faced off on identical boulders, racing against the clock to see who could make the fastest moves. This head-to-head format not only intensified the competition but also allowed competitors to show off dynamic moves and technical prowess.

Overall, JACKALOPE Montreal proved to be the perfect way to wrap up the summer—a weekend filled with unforgettable moments and a true passion for climbing.
